How Do Instruments Make Sound?


Students will classify instruments by the way they produce sound.

Grade: This is appropriate for 1-3.

Materials: Collect as many pictures of instruments as possible. Have many instruments handy to view and play. Butcher paper & marker Stickers (3 different kinds)

Procedures: Have students name as many instruments as they can and write them all on the butcher paper on the board.

Tell students that instruments produce sound in three main ways: vibration, striking (or hitting) and blowing air

Show students all the pictures of instrument and play all of the instruments in the room.

Use the stickers to identify each sound production category.

Have students come to the board and place a sticker next to an instrument name that fits the sound production category.

For older groups, you can graph the different number of instruments.
