Arkansas Alternative Routes to Teacher Certification
Non-Traditional Licensure Program (NTLP)
The Arkansas Department of Education Non-Traditional Licensure Program (NTLP), a progressive and innovative program, prepares eligible candidates to be teachers of record while completing requirements to receive an initial or standard Arkansas teaching license. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5, pass required tests, and clear criminal background checks. Attendance at all instructional modules is mandatory. A Pathwise® mentor is assigned to provide support to each candidate to insure mastery of teaching skills. The two year program accepts applications from January through June for instructional modules beginning in the summer.
Currently there is a substantial surplus of Early Childhood (P-4), Middle Childhood (4-8) and Secondary Social Studies licensed teachers in Arkansas. Candidates are encouraged to check with potential employers BEFORE applying to NTLP to determine the forecast of job availability for NTLP participants. At this time applicants are encouraged to consider secondary (7-12) content areas (with the exception of Social Studies) particularly Mathematics and Science.
Professional Teaching Permit
The Arkansas Department of Education Professional Teaching Permit (PTP) is a one-year permit issued to an experienced professional to teach one or two classes per semester as teacher-of-record in an Arkansas public school. The permit is issued under the auspices of the Non- Traditional Licensure Program to any active professional in the field related to the teaching/licensure subject area. This one-year permit is issued for licensure content areas in grades 9-12 only. Any candidate who teaches three (3) years with a PTP and applies to the Non-Traditional Licensure Program (NTLP) would be eligible for the NTLP “one-year” track.
